Stewardship in Action: Retrofitting a Neighborhood Detention Pond in Springdale

In an exciting first for the region, the Illinois River Watershed Partnership (IRWP), in collaboration with the City of Springdale, is currently leading a pilot project to retrofit a neighborhood detention pond. Supported in part by a 319 grant from the Arkansas Department of Natural Resources, this ongoing project focuses on improving flood management, enhancing water quality, and creating a more functional green space for the community.

Detention ponds are typically designed to manage stormwater runoff and are often dry except during heavy rain events. In many neighborhoods, these ponds are the only green space available, and residents frequently use them informally for recreation or as community gathering spots. However, without proper design, these spaces can feel underutilized and lack ecological value.

Our retrofit addresses these challenges by modifying the pond’s outlet structure to retain water from smaller flood events, enhancing flood control while improving water quality. We’re also removing the outdated trickle channel to restore a more natural water flow. To further improve the site, 5,600 native plants are being added. These plants have deep root systems that will help infiltrate more stormwater, filter pollutants, stabilize soil, and recharge groundwater.

By transforming this underused space into a thriving green infrastructure feature, the project not only provides flood management and water quality benefits but also enhances the neighborhood’s only green space. As the first project of its kind in the watershed, it serves as a pilot for future efforts to integrate stormwater management with community green spaces throughout the region.

Volunteers have already played a vital role in the project’s success, helping plant the pond over the course of two planting events. Their contributions reflect a shared vision of creating healthier, more resilient neighborhoods. As the project progresses, we hope it will inspire similar initiatives across the watershed.
